Candy Flores, 9th, won the 2024 KNEA Student Expression Campaign: Just Imagine Justice, a visual arts contest. Candy is a freshman at Goodland Junior Senior High School. Her digital artwork titled “Nosotras No Callaremos” depicts a Native American woman with a red handprint covering her mouth and a fire-ravaged mountain landscape in the background. Candy will receive a cash award and prize package at the awards gala in Wichita on April 5th and 6th. Her artwork is being made into posters and will be featured at the Capital building in Topeka. Candy is such a kind, sweet student and a friend to all. She is always so polite and so respectful, which makes her even more deserving of this award. She is a very talented young artist. She plans to do the Junior-Senior option for Computer Graphics and to pursue a career in Graphic Design. Candy’s artist statement about her work says, “Statistics show us that approximately 1,500 American Indian and Alaska Native missing persons have been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) throughout the U.S. and approximately 2,700 cases of Murder and Nonnegligent Homicide Offenses have been reported to the Federal Government’s Crime Unit. This art piece is to inspire and educate the public about this horrific injustice to our indigenous population. We will not be silent.”
